I'm bored!!...

Summer vacation! Ahh, remember sipping lemonade under a big shady tree, riding your bikes all day long, playing in the sprinkler... Where did the "good old days" of summer go? Oh,to be carefree, not worry about the stranger walking down the road, you could be gone until dinner. And there was no search party for you. Why are the kids afraid to play outside today? Where do they ride there bikes? up and down the driveway, and oh, if they don't have a helmet on you are a bad parent. I think that we made it just fine with out the helmet. twitch twitch
Are we really in such an electronic age that the computers and TV's need to tell the kids what to do, and we don't even have a playstaion or xbox or whatever else those things are called. Not even television, nope not in our house. Well, we do BUT it is only for family movies, at night! That is all it is for, so... Why do the kids come in and tell me they are bored, what is there to do these days? any ideas I hear on a regular basis that we are the only ones around who don't have a pool, doesn't the kiddie pool count?
OK, so we are off to soccer... yeah, the weekly scheduled things... I think we need one every day for all the kids, and maybe just maybe I won't hear "I'm bored!"

Tell them to paint rocks. That's what my mom would tell us when we came in from playing outside to tell her we were bored. She would get us set up- and we would paint the little rocks in the driveway. It would distract us long enough until we came up with something else to do- like another round of "Star Wars" with picnic table as the Millenium Falcon.

Paint rocks, hmmm... I could even have them "pick" the rocks out of the field, I think that Phil would like that!! Get the rocks out of the way for haying, and keep them busy!! yipee...
Thanks Beth

How wonderful to hear them say they are bored!! That means they have to use their imaginations and learn to entertain themselves! I was just reading a book about how GOOD it is to hear kids say that, because if they are not saying it, then they are overentertained. Those times of boredom are the times they learn to CREATE. That's really good!! [When Sarah and Wendy are done with the book, you can look at it.] One thing I hope you are doing is READING with them every day...and letting them read to you. A half hour will do it, but you will be amazed at the results!

(The reason they can't ride their bikes is because you live on 102!! Duh!! When Betsey and Abby want to ride bikes, they are welcome to come over to my road. Kids are riding by, people jogging, walking, horseriding, etc. all the time.)
